Meet Mon and Elle
Mixing synthetic nostalgia with modern-day musings, Mon (he/him) and Elle (she/her) founded the new sound of retro-electro, Lemonelle, in South/East London in 2022.
But this wasn’t the real beginning for the duo. Their steps can be traced back to working the venue circuit across the UK, experimenting with producers and like-minded artists. But no matter where the music took them, they kept coming back to their shared infatuation with the energy of 80s synth pop.
The pair started experimenting with synths and samples, layering in melodies and harmonies, from Elle’s studio flat. Recording in a make-shift sound booth in the bedroom wardrobe – a far-cry from the neon-soaked dancefloors and Miami beach vibes the music encapsulates.
Lemonelle delve into the heartache and intimacy of what it means to be human – emotional naivety, the anxiety of separation, acceptance (and unacceptance) of what is, rebuilding after the chaos, and becoming who you are meant to be – all against a backdrop of glittering synths, and enrapturing beats. They play on the tension between the artificiality of electronic sound design versus the earthy soul of their universally recognised lyrical themes.
